CLEVELAND, OH -- The Cleveland City Stars have signed 6-5 defender Anthony Peters from D.C. United of MLS, pending U.S. Soccer approval.

Peters originally signed with Cleveland in February but was let out of his contract in order to accept the MLS offer. Peters appeared in the U.S. Open Cup match for D.C. United against FC Dallas and had two stints on loan with the USL-2 this season, playing one match with Harrisburg City Islanders and four matches with Richmond Kickers.

"We have liked Anthony for a while and we were really close to bringing him to Cleveland at the start of the season," said City Stars Executive Director Aaron Tredway.

"He was able to make an MLS roster and that experience will help him as he works his way into our lineup. Anthony is an athletic player, especially for a guy with his tremendous size, and he's a strong communicator from the back line. We're happy to have Anthony here in Cleveland and he'll have a chance to help us for the remainder of the season."

The native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana played college soccer at the University of Kentucky for two seasons before spending two years playing in Norway and Iceland.

Peters returned to the States in 2007 and finished his final two years of college eligibility at Division II West Virginia Wesleyan where he was the 2008 West Virginia Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year and an NSCAA First Team All-American.

Peters is in Cleveland and will be with the team for Friday's match with the Charleston Battery.
