AUSTIN, TX -- The Austin Aztex announced today that midfielder Yordany Alvarez has signed a new three-year contract with the club that will see him in the red and white stripes through the 2012 season.
The Cuban national joined the Aztex for the 2009 season and tallied three goals and two assists in just 14 games before breaking his foot.
Alvarez is the first signing of many in the coming weeks as the season fast approaches. The young athletic midfielder defected from Cuba in March of 2008 when the Cuban U23 national team played in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Tampa, Florida. Alvarez attended the Aztex tryouts in California last spring and was signed to a professional contract in March of 2008.
“We are obviously delighted that Yordany as committed himself to the Aztex for a further three year period,” said Aztex head coach Adrian Heath. “He was playing extremely well before his injury and I honestly believe that this will be his break-out year to show the wider football world his undoubted talent.”
The Cuban started his professional career playing for FC Cienfuegos of the Campeonato Nacional de Futbol de Cuba in 2006.
The 2010 Aztex schedule will be announced in the coming days, along with season ticket options and prices.
