Puerto Rico signs three new players
Club adds former Rhino Nurse, two collegians

BAYAMON, PR -- The Puerto Rico Islanders confirmed the signing of three new players for the 2010 season, bringing to the side former Rochester Rhino Chris Nurse and two recent collegiate graduates. Joining the club from the college ranks are Puerto Rican international Richard Martinez and a Honduran freshman Junior Sandoval.

Nurse played for Rochester in 2009 (20 Toe Photo)Martínez joins the club after four years at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York, where he was honored by the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with a selection to the All-Rookies Team in 2006. He was later named to the CAA Second Team in 2007, the CAA First Team and NSCAA-All Southeast Region Team in 2008. In 2009, he was named CAA Defender of the Year and in addition to another appearance on the CAA First Team.

Martínez, a veteran PDL player who has spent time with the Long Island Rough Riders (2009) and Westchester Flames (2007-08) has also been called up to play with the Puerto Rico National Team, earning five international caps since his 2008 debut.

Along with Martínez, English midfielder Chris Nurse will join the Islanders’ squad in 2010. Nurse started his professional soccer career at the National Conference of England with Stevenage Borough in 2004-05. He then played for Moorgreen (2005-06), Hinkley United (2006-07), helping the team nearly earn promotion to the next flight.

In 2008, Nurse then spent brief stints with Tamworth, Welling United and Halesowen Town before signing with the Rochester Rhinos of the USL First Division in 2009. Following his Rhinos stint, The Guyanese international returned to England and played at the National Conference level for AFC Telford United before signing with the Puerto Rico Islanders.

The Islanders also signed Honduran midfielder Junior Sandoval, who was playing for Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta. Sandoval was GPC’s leading scorer in 2009 as a freshman with 29 points on nine goals and 11 assists. He was named to the First Team of the National Junior College Athletic Association - Region 17th.

All signings are pending USSF Division II Pro League approval.
