AUSTIN, Texas – Peri Marosevic found the back of the net three times en route to a 3-1 victory against the Arizona Sahuaros Tuesday at House Park. The three-goal performance is only the second hat trick in Aztex history. The Austin Aztex witnessed the first ever hat-trick when forward Max griffin scored three goals in a league showdown against Miami FC on June 19.
Austin’s first chance against the Sahuaros came in the form of a penalty kick. The penalty kick was awarded to the Aztex when forward Stephan Campbell was tripped up five yards into the Sahuaros’ box.
Midfielder Michael Callahan stepped up to take the shot for the Aztex but saw his attempt thwarted by Sahuaros’ goal keeper Brad Swenby, who was able to dive to his right and push the ball away from the goal.
The Aztex were able to gain another scoring opportunity after some pretty combination play on the right flank from both midfielder Sullivan Silva and right back Wes Allen.
Eventually Marosevic received the ball from Silva inside the Arizona goal box and rocketed a shot toward the goal. Unfortunately for the Aztex, Swenby was able to come up big again and sprawled to his left this time to keep the score knotted at 0.
Marosevic would get his revenge in the 35th minute though after Callahan aggressively pushed the ball through the middle of the field, where he was able to find Marosevic streaking down the left side. Seconds later, with the ball at his feet, Marosevic confidently slipped the ball far post beating Swenby for his first career goal in an Aztex uniform.
Arizona responded in the 55th minute when Alex Lopez found Kevin Cornwall on a long ball which Cornwall eventually was able to put past Aztex goal keeper Sean Kelley.
The Silva-Marosevic connection would remain strong even when the pressure was heavy.
M. Griffin dispossessed the Sahuaros near midfield and played a ball up to Silva, who again was able to lay a ball off to Marosevic coming down along the left side of the Arizona goal box.
From there Marosevic took a few touches, cocked back and curled a ball around Swenby to the far post for the game winning goal.
With the win, the Aztex move on to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup to take on the Chivas USA of Major League Soccer (MLS) next Tuesday in Fullerton, Calif..
