ATLANTA, GA -- The Silverbacks continue to make roster moves in preparation for the 2008 USL1 season. Former Silverback midfielder/defender Greg Chevalier rejoins the club, along with newly acquired midfielder/forward Jerson Monteiro.
“These new signings give us more depth,” said head coach Jason Smith. “I expect them both to contribute considerably during the season.”
Chevalier played for the Silverbacks in 2005, featuring in 10 games, appearing in 21. In 2006 he rejoined the USL2 Pittsburgh Riverhounds—where he played in 2004 before joining the Silverbacks—making 14 appearances. This preseason Chevalier has played in all three of the Silverbacks preseason scrimmages as a substitute holding midfielder.
“Greg is an incredibly hard working, versatile player who will give us depth both in the midfield and in the back,” said Smith. “After being away from the game for a year, he has come back in the best form of his career.”
Monteiro joins the Silverbacks after a two-year stint in Major League Soccer. He began training with the Silverbacks on Monday.
A native of Luanda, Angola, he came to the U.S. at age 14 to attend school in Houston, Texas. The eight pick out of the University of Alabama Birmingham (2003-2006) in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, Monteiro appeared five times for the Fire his rookie season, tallying one goal against D.C. United on March 3, 2007. He also appeared in three reserve games for the Fire, featuring in two of them. In September of 2007 he was traded to D.C. United in exchange for a conditional 2008 MLS SuperDraft pick.
“Jerson is a hard working front runner with MLS experience,” said Smith. “We brought him in expecting him to fight for a starting spot up top.”
At UAB Monteiro led the Blazers in goals in 2006 with 14, earning him All-Midwest Rregion Second-Team honors. He currently sits second in career goals (34) on the UAB scoring list.
In other roster moves, the club released Tweety Walters, Anthony Wolfe, and Angel Rivillo. Walters had been training with the club but could not come to terms. He appeared 12 times for the Silverbacks in 2007, his only year with the club. Wolfe had yet to rejoin the club this preseason due to national team duty with Trinidad & Tobago. In his one year with the club, Wolfe tallied one goal in four appearances with the club.
Rivillo appeared four times for the Silverbacks in 2007.
The Silverbacks continue to prepare for the 2008 USL1 season training twice daily. The season opens April 19 at Silvebacks Park against the Carolina RailHawks.
